A New Found Love Contractions: the worst pain you can ever experience. There I was laying on my bed, groaning in absolute pain just after taking a hot bath, thinking that was going to subdue the feeling of being ripped apart but no it made it that much worse. At 24 years of age, pregnant with your first child, all you can emotionally feel is fear. Not knowing what to expect when that special day finally arrives. My mom trying to comfort me but also recording my experience and I can hear my dad worried in the corner watching me in absolute pain yelling at my mom, â€Å"Let’s take her to the hospital already, put down the camera!† Mind you, this was somewhere around 10 P.M. and earlier that day I was experiencing the same pain but a lot milder and somewhat bearable. I decided to drive to the hospital because as any normal laboring mother would, you would think it’s time for the baby to arrive. The drive to the hospital, the first time, was filled with excitement as I was ready to b e admitted. Once I get strapped and situated into the contraction machine, I sit there and I wait for what felt like 3 hours. When the nurse finally walks in, she checks to see my dilation progress which is where the disappointment comes in. She tells me, â€Å"No honey, I’m sorry but you are only at  ½ cm† . I tell her, â€Å" but the pain is starting to feel intense.† She responds, â€Å"It’s only going to get worse so be prepared.† Following the first visit to the hospital, was a sad, bitter, and sort of angry feeling. Being sent home after thinking you are going to be admitted is pretty frustrating when all you want to do is meet the child that has been living inside of you for nine months. I couldn’t understand why they couldn’t just take me in but I listened and drove 40 minutes back home only to wallow in some more pain. A couple hours pass before the pain worsens and intensifies. I felt like my back was being jack-hammered and radiating to my abdomen. I decided to make a second trip back to the hospital with both of my parents this time and the same thing happens again. I felt this sudden urge to cry because of one: the pain, and two: I remembered the nurse saying it was only going to get worse and I was too afraid for that pain to come. So being sent home a second time only made me nervous and fearful for what I was about to endure. When I arrived home for the second time, I think to myself maybe a bath might help alleviate this pain. Boy was I completely wrong. I think the only thing I did was make it worse and kick-start my labor process! And here we are again back to me laying down in pain taking these contractions like a champ. I finally decide to head to the hospital again for the third time in the same day, but this time the drive was filled with fear, nervousness, and my mom telling me to hold the baby in. I believe that drive was the scariest moment for me because I really believed I was going to be one of those moms that had their baby in the car. Despite me suffering from labor pains, I felt bad for my dad because he was the driver but I had never seen him so scared or nervous in my life. It’s about 11:20 P.M. maybe, I don’t remember the exact time but it was late. The hospital was closed and because I thought I knew my way around, I ended up pulling up to the wrong side instead of going to the emergency entrance, duh! I am only having a baby. So because of that little mistake I had to beg security to open up the doors and let me in before I have this baby on the floor. Of course they do, and they ask if I am in labor. My face said it all and she tells me to hurry and get to the delivery room. Walking up to that room was endless with contractions coming and going but I finally manage to get to the buzzer to let me in. As soon as the nurses pulled my clothes off, they frantically call on their walkies, â€Å"We have an emergency in the triage room and we are going to need everyone’s assistance!† They manage to lay me down in the robe that is adequate for birthing and I felt this strong need to push and just as I was going to, one of the nurses stops me and says, â€Å"Not yet hold it for just a bit longer.† I looked at her like she was some crazy idiot but I held it in despite the feeling. When they finally wheel me into the birthing room, they s et me up with painful needles and position me for the â€Å"pushing† part. My doctor walks in frantically trying to get ready, and telling me to give her a push but I was too scared. And why after all this anticipation of wanting to meet my baby? Because I was starting to feel what most women who have had natural births call â€Å"the ring of fire† and let me tell you they were right about that. My doctor says, â€Å"Marisol, look at me! You are doing great and I can already see her, give me a strong push!† I responded with, â€Å"I can’t!† But without even thinking twice I did and then I heard the baby’s famous first cry. That moment was my moment of relief because the pain immediately went away but also a feeling of love and amazement because I couldn’t believe that I had just delivered a tiny human. The moment they put her in my arms was the moment I fell in love. Love is truly blind until the moment you experience becoming a parent for the very first time. The experience of motherhood has taught me a diverse am ount of love and acceptance. I was never prepared to be a mom but I wouldn’t have changed anything that happened. My birthing room was filled with different people of different races who all came together to help me bring a life into this world, and no matter the intense amount of fear I felt, the nurses made me feel safe and that everything was going to be ok. You can never forget an experience like this, so I hold it close and very dear to my heart and I thank those people who were all there for me that night.

Throughout human history, many governments have come and gone whenever people rely on the government to meet their basic needs. Watteaus FÃ ªtes Galantes: Style and Meaning Discuss the content and the possible meanings of Watteaus FÃ ªtes Galantes The FÃ ªtes Galantes is derived from a genre of paintings produced in the eighteenth century, depicting aristocratic scenes of mirth and merriment set in the mythical world of Arcadia, where humanity and nature live together in harmony. The reasons behind this deliberate juxtaposition of both the aristocratic everyday and setting it in the mythical world was twofold. First, Antoine Watteau, the chief designer of the genre, wished for his paintings to be recognised by the government appointed Academic Des Beaux Arts, who still ranked scenes of the everyday in a lower class than those depicting biblical, historical or mythological scenes with an educational theme. Secondly, the economics behind painting and commissions were changing. In Watteaus economic world, instead of commissions coming almost exclusively from either the crown or the church, as it did previously, private patrons were also commissioning works, and provided most of the revenue for artists. But they also, whether by accident or deliberately, provoke a whole series of other responses, notable insofar as they are representative of nothing, and exist purely as decorative pieces of art. Indeed the reaction at the time was to place Watteau in a category of his own, as the ambiguity of his representations tended to eschew easy categorization. David R. Marshall suggests that: Watteaus paintings were difficult for contemporaries to classify; today they can be understood in terms of spectators response to the semantic vacuum that they present.[1] So, the genre of FÃ ªtes Galantes tends to subvert traditional ways of reading, introducing ambiguity on the level, insofar that the image takes precedence over what exactly is represented. In a sense the FÃ ªtes Galantes was designed to be ambiguous. Thus, the Fete Galante, especially Watteaus work, becomes extremely difficult to read in a straightforward manner; arguably, his work could be laced with irony, his landscapes invoke an almost impressionist free dom, and his concern with the image over the message signalled that his work reveals meanings that perhaps were intentional, or else purely coincidental and decorative. FÃ ªtes Galantes (1717), is a perfect representation of the style that came to be named after the painting. In the scene, a collection of characters are assembled around a statue of an angel. The background of the image invokes impressionist works, insofar as the trees and the composition of the image seems more in tune with the way light works, rather than the simple telling of a biblical or historical tale, as was the nature of previous work. Indeed, the ambiguity of this work is exactly what makes it compelling. Julie Anne Plax suggests that: Watteau consistently applied coherent strategies of representation aimed at subverting high art.[2] Indeed, this particular piece certainly suggests a deliberate eschewing of the concepts of high art for instance, the statue is a plain, generic statue, depicting an angel. Instead of elevating the divine in the picture, Watteau reduces it to the level of the mundane, as a rather dour looking statue in the corner of the composition. Instead o f this divine element, our eye is drawn to the centre of the piece, where some aristocrats talk and lounge in the sun. The resultant effect is a displacement of our expectations, as the scene of the everyday takes precedence over the historical and mythical connotations of the surroundings. Conversation was an important facet to life for Watteau, and indeed, the congregation of people that appear in FÃ ªtes Galantes certainly encapsulates this theme that remains prevalent in his work. Watteau sought to capture the rhythms of conversation, and indeed, the ambiguity of the piece, and the way it juxtaposes the divine, the everyday, the mythical and the traditional gives the impression that the piece is stuck in a dialogue with itself over what it is supposed to be representing. The conversational theme is prevalent in all of the FÃ ªtes galantes, and it is precisely this, juxtaposition of the high-brow conceptual and representational framework, pasted over the ordinary activities of a few aristocrats that makes the work, in a subtle way, revolutionary. Michalski suggests that: Almost all FÃ ªtes galantes should be interpreted from the viewpoint of the conversational theme. Watteau [] accepted the high status of conversation within society, and he paid homage to it thoug h his artful construction of discursive situations and though the discreet but self-revealing conduct of his figures[3]. Indeed, this glorification of conversation instead of the high historical concepts of modern art could be seen in a number of ways first, as a cynical drive to make money from two differing audiences; first, to satisfy the needs of the Academie and maintain an audience, and second, to actually satirize the concept of high art by smuggling the mundaneness of the everyday into a grand, historical painting. Thus, the work can be seen as an ingenious way of making profit from two increasingly disparate groups of people, or else it could be read as a more subversive work of art seeking to destroy the sanctity of representative art from within. This ambiguity and decorousness of the art is precisely what makes the work both fascinating and prescient to an audience that would later treat a work of art as a means to represent the artists unique vision, rather than a self less depiction of biblical or narrative events. Therefore, the work could be read as anticipating the impressionists and modernist art. Indeed, this is one particular reading of the piece. The decorative aspects of FÃ ªtes Galantes certainly can be read as a prototype for the modernist art obsessed by surface representation and secularism that was to come. Overall, the genre of the FÃ ªtes Galantes was important insofar as, despite its position as a distinctly commercial genre, artists such as Watteau, arguably satirized the academy by introducing the authority of the artist into these works. Juxtaposing the everyday with the mythical setting of Arcadia, Watteau appealed to both the French Royal establishment, and also the private aristocratic patrons that wished to see themselves in paint, conversing and doing everyday things in the countryside. Thus, the piece itself exists as a decorative piece, unencumbered by the traditional trappings of biblical narrative and / or morally stimulating works from mythology or history. And, by pushing to the forefront the purely decorative, in many ways secularising high art, Watteau brought to the forefront notions about the relationship between the artist and his art, as well as being a forerunner for movements such as Impressionism and Modernism, that would revolutionize the relationship between artist and art, and also mutate the representational powers of painting from an objective depiction, to an obsession with the various forms and the subtleties of seeing objects differently. Overall, Fete Galante is open to a whole series of different meanings and readings, but perhaps it is precisely this sense of ambiguity, this mismatch of certain tenets of classical, traditional high art, and the emergent vocabulary of low art that causes the image itself to be considered over the specificities of what or who it represents. Boys Antisocial Behavior Essay -- Education Argumentative Persuasive

Boys' Antisocial Behavior In almost any college class you walk into you will find that there are more female students than male. This wasn't the case years ago. David Thomas' article " The Mind of Man" points out that women are progressing readily in today's society, but where are the men? Years ago men were the only ones permitted into colleges. But as time went by people's ways of thinking changed dramatically. People began to realize that girls were not getting the education boys were, and things had to be changed. I think of this change, that society made, as a pendulum. Years ago, the pendulum hung to one side. The side of boys' education. This side completely dismissed girls education. Society wanted to fix this wrong by moving the pendulum towards girls' education. The ideal thing would have been for the pendulum to have hung in the middle, with equal educational opportunities for both sexes. The problem though, according to Thomas' article, is that the pendulum went too far, and now the boys are being disregarded as the girls once were. There isn't a problem with girls being educated and getting ahead in the world, that's fantastic; the problem is, boys are not getting the same education. Thomas' believes that the problem begins in grade school. Something is occurring in elementary schools that is turning boys away from education. This something is, predominantly, female teachers. Being female myself I don't think that female teachers are bad, rather that most of them are unconsciously encouraging the anti-social behavior of boys. "Women teachers consistently praised girls more than boys, and equally consistently criticized the boys' behavior, often regarding it as a serious problem requiring remedial treatme... ...school teachers was increasing. Boys, however continued to out-perform girls in scientific and technical subjects where teaching was still dominated by men" (122). With the statistics provided we can see that boys are performing poorly academically when in the hands of women. It isn't known for sure what's causing this problem or how it can be fixed, but one must start by realizing that there is a problem. The only solution that I can think of is that each and every teacher must work at putting positive ideas and positive feelings into each and every child. It is a hard task, especially living in today's world, but if teachers can show children that there is a bright future waiting for them they will work towards getting there. Work Cited Thomas, David. Generational Poverty Essay

This week in class the focus has been on generational poverty. There are a lot of key factors that lead to poverty. Poverty does not exist because people want it to. Poverty is a way of life for those who don’t know another way and feel that they don’t have a way out. Every day in society people turn their heads or frown up their nose at people who they see living in poverty because they think they are better than them and will not lift a hand to help them out. The big question is why do we do this? In most cases, the poverty line or clash of the classes are based on wealth and there is certainly a variation in the wealth among the population. But classism exists from the beginning of education to death. Schools pass out grades and establish an intelligence stratification. The better students take higher academic classes and separate themselves from students taking lower academic classes. College graduates typically achieve better incomes than non-college graduates and raise higher in wealth and stratification. Though it may seem unfair, typically those who achieve better grades are those individuals who apply themselves and try hard to get out of the situation that they are in if it is bad. Achieve is rewarded while sloth is not rewarded. Society works best this way, because it gives incentives for everyone to achieve, while not rewarding those who do not make and effort or better yet even try. Woman play a big role in the family when it comes to poverty. Most of the families are single parented. In this paper, I will be discuss what generational poverty is. Also I will discuss and identify the complex factors involved in overcoming generational poverty, explain challenges the aged face when there is a lack of access to employment and describe the uni que challenges that women face through the different life stages. Lastly it will be explained how what I have learned changed my perspective and the way in which I approach special population. Generational Poverty Generational poverty is defined as having been in poverty for at least two generations. It is important to recognize this time factor to be able to separate it from â€Å"situational poverty,† characteristically understood as a lack of resources due to particular sets of events, i.e. a death, chronic illness, divorce, etc. from the discussion of generational poverty in this chapter. These two concepts are distinguishable, which will help us put our students’ behavior in better perspective. A key indicator in defining and separating these poverty types is â€Å"attitude.† In generational poverty, the players feel that society owes them a living whereas in situational, they often allow pride to keep them from accepting needed assistance. Generational poverty has its own culture, hidden rules and belief system. The video clips deal with the role of the â€Å"momma† as central to the family structure. She is the powerful one and the ultimate caregiver and rescuer. Punishment in her mind is about forgiveness not about change and hers is the love and relationship that ties to the soul. In examining these distinguishing differences, our author gave a humorous case study of an actual court case. While the nature of the case is quite disturbing from the perspective of a middle class reader, behaviors become crystal clear and predictable. Identify the complex factors involved in overcoming generational poverty? There are four major complex factors involved in overcoming generational poverty. The first one is housing. Housing stability is critical to being successful in education, employment and parenting. If basic security needs, such as housing, cannot be met, it is unlikely, if not impossible that other achievements needed to break the cycle of poverty can be made. Housing quality can affect the cycle of poverty in many ways. For example, one who lives in substandard housing can be contributed to negative health outcomes and concentrated disadvant ages such as bad business investments. If basic housing needs are not met, a positive environment for learning cannot be established, such as encouragement of completion of homework, having family reading places, or peer interactions. The next factor is education. Education attainment is a major if not the most important key to breaking the cycle of generational poverty. Research has shown that growing up in a lower income family negatively impacts educational obtainment needed to break the cycle of poverty. Learned behavior within peer groups, families and neighborhoods can also contribute to the cycle of poverty. Those with minimal education tend to find themselves employed at low paying jobs with little or no benefits. In addition, financial literacy and training is an important educational component that is needed to break the cycle of poverty. Employment is the third factor. There has been a significant decline in manufacturing jobs, which are typically high paying with good benefits. There is a growing mismatch with the skills of these displaced workers and available jobs. The loss of these manufacturing jobs has resulted in many folks going back to generational poverty. In a lot of cases, there are a growth of new jobs but these jobs tends to come with low pay and no benefits, which can further prevent breaking out of the cycle poverty. Also, multiple income based antipoverty programs can have a negative impact of work incentives. This is due to the fact these programs have to be funded with funds that could be used to pay workers to help them overcome poverty. The fourth complex factor is single parenting. Explain challenges the aged face when there is a lack of access to employment. Some challenges the aged are faced with due to lack of access to employment are: vulnerability to risk and shocks due to irregular and unstable income. They could also be suffer from deteriorating health, declining stamina, reduced physical ability, agility and strength, as well as decreased mobility due to lack of mobility and constant movement from working. Another challenge is high out-of-pocket health expenditures or lack of health insurance. Most aged people struggle to pay for basic medicines or treatment, which is often desperately needed to manage chronic illnesses such as high blood pressure. With lack of employment, comes a high level of stress and anxiety for the elderly. This would come about due to the constant worrying about how they will earn enough to buy food and other basic essentials, especially if they are supporting grandchildren or other family members who are sick. Describe the unique challenges that women face through the different life stages. Women face a lot of different challenges that they face through the different life stages. Women only have two choices. These choices are marrying men who  will provide life time financial support so that they can prevent destitution later on in their lives. Also if a woman pursues a higher education so that they can establish a career and choose to marry and raise the family they might be able to prevent a lifetime of neediness and impoverishment. As a citizen or population, women majority of the time earn a lower income than their male counterparts. The Equal Pay Act that passed in the 1960s was supposed to narrow the earning gap between men and women, yet a gender pay gap still exists today. Even after accounting for possible explanations such as demographic characteristics, family situations, work hours, and work experience, women who work full-time year-round still are paid 77% of a man’s pay ($37,000 for a woman compared to $48,000 for a man in 2009) (U.S. Census Burea u 2012). After a woman has accumulated years in the workplace, it seems that the wage gap would shrink because of experience. This, however is not the case in this instance. Inequities start early and worsen over time. Research has shown a 5% difference one year after college graduation and a 12% difference after 10 years. The only identified explanation for the unexplained gaps was gender discrimination (Arnst 2007; Boushey, Aarons, and Smith 2010). Has what you learned changed your perspective and the way you will approach the special populations discussed? From watching the videos and doing the research I have learned that poverty can happen to anyone. Once you become a product or victim of poverty it is hard to become stirred away. Everything around you condemns you to a certain life style. There is really no one there to give you hope or guidance. As a child, you are obligated to help you parents raise income or money and if that means you leaving school then that is what you have to do. Not one single person will tell you to stay in school. The education level for those in poverty in simply does not exist. The community has their own language that if you were to go into the corporate world you would be dismissed because they don’t understand what you are saying to them. The parent don’t give the children any enthusiasm or guidance letting them know that your life can change they teach them to settle for what you have and know. As a child I was not raised to believe that you can do anything. Your way of life is set by you the individual not anybody else. You change anything you want and if you fail the first time keep trying and never give up. It only takes a single person to help someone achieve their dreams and I plan to help as people as I can. As a single parent I live pay check to paycheck and can fall into poverty at any given time and I would want someone to help me so in return I will do that for others. References Jerry V. As I see it there are two possible ways to deal with this situation. Firstly (1), the project manager claims to have all the relevant information to handle the planning. If that is the case then he could simply put the plan together himself and then implement it. For this to be the most effective way the manager truly has to have all the relative information but also he has to have the respect and confidence of his subordinates to make a proper plan since they seem just as eager to finish on time as he does. Secondly (2), the manager could see the workers enthusiasm as a possibility for the making of good solutions and ideas. With that in mind the manager could decide to make the planning into a group effort, drawing from the ingenuity and knowledge of his staff. For this to be the most effective way, the manager has to have faith in the ability of his subordinateIn this case the manager is asking his subordinates to undertake a project under unusual and possibly difficult circumstances. As this consultancy firm is most likely based in the western world, the manager is asking his people to leave their comfort zones to conduct their business in a far-away land. It would be in his, the projects and the firms best interest to go with a group effort in order to find suitable candidates for this trip. In this way those who do not want to go are not forced and those with a special interest in the project are not shunned. The manager gets his since his team will consist only of people of interest and dedication whom wanted to be there in the first place; the project benefits since its getting the best possible manpower (given that enthusiastic people work harder) and finally the firm is better off since this way of manning the team left no damage to morale. With different cases it is normal to reach different conclusions as to how its best to solve a particular problem. With the first case the problem was a simple one; theres no fuss, just take an executive decision and run with it. Any time spent on consulting the staff would have been a waste since their opinions were spread and a solid conclusion would have been hard to come by. In the other two cases things got a bit more difficult. There you had big decision that demanded accuracy and good thinking. As described in case 2, any decision taken was depended on something else, whether it was the workers faith in their manager or the managers faith in his workers. These variables give room for at least two different ways of plan-making. With the third case, a hint of logic told you that working as a group would create a venue for those interested to volunteer and for others to back off. Rather than making the decision for them (and given that they all have similar attributes) this was the diplomatic way which left no toes trampled. These cases differ in scale; one being tiny and insignificant while two of them are big and important. What the outcome maybe tells us is that when dealing with bigger, tougher to handle tasks it is less likely that you have all the info and, subsequently, all the answers. When that is the case it is usually a wiser strategy to consult co-workers, subordinates, bosses, specialists etc. In those lighter cases where consulting has no value adding purpose and mostly just wastes time, it may be better to simply grab the torch and run with it.
